The official name of the shrub from whence the oil comes is Vitex agnus castus, also known as chaste tree. The plant grows heartily in Turkey, where the essential oil is wildcrafted from the berries and leaves.
The berries are sometimes referred to chasteberries and, as the name implies, they were once used to promote chastity in men. History says the chasteberries worked so well at removing the sexual desire in Medieval monasteries that it become a regular ingredient in many dishes. Hence its nickname became “monks pepper.”
