3 Ways Spirituality Helps Anxiety

If you have suffered from anxiety periodically or as a constant companion in life you know the suffering it can cause. Finding refuge and relief from stress, worry, panic or generalized anxiety is something you may be searching for? Spirituality is about seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger than ourselves, the meaning or the purpose of life. For many it can take the form of religious observance, prayer, meditation or a belief in a higher power. Others find spirituality in nature or music.

As Dr Margaret Paul so poetically points out, “Pain and joy are in the same place in the heart, you cannot put a lid on pain without putting a lid on your joy as well. Are you opting for the flatness of the illusion of safety or are you willing to experience both the lows and highs of life? Today cry and laugh with your whole heart”

To that end, anxiety, panic & stress can simply become a worry or a fear that people feel temporarily and they do not have to be a permanent companion. Anxiety can also cause people to give up on their spiritual beliefs; it can hinder or halt them from life functions and question their reasons for existing. This existential crisis often leaves one feeling lost, lonely and without connection. Looking at these two definitions of spirituality and anxiety, they are polarizing terms. In fact, one can subdue or cancel out the other. Specifically there are three ways that spirituality can reduce or eliminate anxiety.

1. Finding a sense of purpose: Spirituality may uncover what’s most important to you. By listening to your inner voice or connecting to your intuition, you can become more clear and focused. This can be accomplished by learning to quiet your mind and realize you are not your thoughts.

2. Another way to liberate yourself from suffering is to realize or remember that you are not alone. You are not separate from the whole. Asking yourself the following questions may give you an idea of the connections available to you in your community.

What brings you the most joy?
What do you most value?
What or who inspires you?

These answers can give you a starting point to make connections with others. Fellowship or social groups allow you to enjoy more clear focus on what activities you want to spend your time on. Spending time with others allows you experience more love and compassion both for yourself and others. Compassion and self-love are the keys to unlocking inner peace. Forming relationships, bonding with others, belonging to a community allows you to continue your growth.

3. The third way spirituality can reduce anxiety, is to allow yourself to simply let go. When you realize that humans are all connected and that the burdens that you are feeling aren’t in your control, inner peace may result. We are all simply a reflection of the divineness in each other. Coping with stress, releasing anxiety and quieting your mind is much easier when we realize that we are all in this together.

Remember, suffering from anxiety is optional. An awakening is realizing your own thought patterns are not serving you well and that there are methods to creating new ones through a spiritual path. This change takes times just like a habit. Cultivating your spirituality involves looking at yourself in a purposeful way, realizing that there are others you can connect with and seeing that you are not in control of everything that happens in life. ~Namaste
