The next upcoming holiday is Cinco de Mayo, an annual celebration commemorating the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over encroaching French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. Symbolically, this holiday has also come to represent victory over life’s struggle. Due to our admiration for the rich cultural history of Mexico from which this holiday draws its origin, we wanted to highlight some of the historical knowledge which emerged from the ancient cultures of Mexico.

The Aztec civilization extended throughout Central America and notably established an intricate system of roads throughout their empire. The Aztec created the largest city in Mexico called Tenotchtitlan, an architectural feat whose ruins have revealed a great deal of the knowledge that the Aztec people had discovered in their time. Clues to this knowledge are left in the form of intricate carvings, symbols, and hieroglyphs which adorn the ruins of these ancient Mexican people.  While the ancient people of the Americas developed separately from the rest of the world, these ruins reveal that the Aztecs were aware of metaphysical knowledge known by other ancient civilizations throughout the world.

Among the ancient ruins of Tenotchtitlan exist several temple structures which are presumed to have filled the dual roles of religious center and healing sanctuary. The snake, an important Aztec symbol, is commonly found on the walls of such temples and is believed to represent the healing potential of medicine. One of the great Aztec gods, Quetzalcoatl, is a great winged serpent which heals the sick and brings knowledge. Interpretations of glyphs on these Aztec temples reveal that the Aztec people had knowledge of sound healing for hundreds of years, a knowledge apparently imparted by the god Quetzalcoatl. Glyphs depict sound healers utilizing various instruments on sick patients.

In addition, these glyphs reveal that the Aztec people understood the properties of resonance and thus were able to utilize crystal frequencies for healing. Of significance to this is the crystal selenite, which grows in enormous subterranean caves throughout Mexico. The Aztecs would utilize selenite in full moon rituals in order to enact healing.

Perhaps most notable of all the Aztec accomplishments was their knowledge of astrology. The Aztecs had a remarkable understanding of the movement of the stars and were able to determine certain celestial patterns such as the approach of comets or celestial events such as eclipses. The Aztecs recorded their astrological knowledge on enormous calendars upon which they would record events that were predicted to occur.

Historians have corroborated several of these predictions as having actually occurred, including the demise of the Aztec empire and the rise of the current Mexican country. Several of these predictions have yet to occur, the most notable of which is the prediction that the world is currently entering a new astrological age, similar to the notion of the approaching Aquarian Age shared by many modern metaphysicists.
