The Divine Message Of Passover

Springtime is a season symbolic of positive transformation, life, and new beginnings. These themes are well-reflected in the Judaic holiday of Passover, celebrated in the early spring, this year 2017 it begins on April 10th and ends April 18th. This traditional celebration represents the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. According to tradition, the divine became compassionate towards the Israelites’ suffering and afflicted by their Egyptian rulers with a series of plagues.  In so much, the divine spared the people of Israel, “passing over” their homes & sparing their firstborn. Ever since, the Passover holiday has come to represent a time of renewal, hope, and shedding of negativity. This week, we wanted to share the divine message of Passover so that you may better utilize the vital life energy present at this time of high astrological energy. According to Jewish scholars, the story of Passover speaks to the value and importance of memory, optimism, faith, family, and responsibility. Passover brings lessons & guidance all.

1. Without the memory of distant events, we would be doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over. Upon granting freedom to the Isrealites, the divine commanded: “Remember that the Lord took you out of the bondage of slavery.” Thus remembrance became a divine mandate leading to the invention of the idea of history. Only by contemplating one’s past is it possible to form a sense of identity, purpose, and develop wisdom.
2. To study Passover is to acknowledge that the difficult task was not getting the Jewish people out of Egypt, but of getting Egypt out of the Jewish people. They had become so habituated to their status as slaves, they lost hope in being able to improve their lot in life. The true message of Passover is to acknowledge that with divine grace anything is possible and that all struggles will eventually come to an end. Thus it is far more advantageous to possess an optimistic attitude as one will enjoy life more despite difficulties.
3. The Passover holiday represents that nothing happens by accident and that behind all things is a divine plan. The divine force that saved the Israelites showed that a loving ominous force is constantly involved in our lives. The Passover story conveys that history is not happenstance. It follows a Divine master plan. It has a predestined order. Faith gives us the certainty that whatever our present-day problems, history moves in the direction of love & forgiveness.
4. In addition, the Passover story places great emphasis on this lesson: the way to perfect the world is to begin with our own families. It was not strategy and tactics that saved the Israelites, but rather their willingness to find refuge with their families and wait out the destructive plagues ruining Egypt. It was the Jewish children who gave their parents hope to leave Egypt and enter the desert in search of a better life. Thus family whether by blood or by choice is seen as an ultimate motivating factor in life, something to turn towards in times of duress or crisis.
5. Finally, the Passover story teaches us the importance of being responsible in order to help others. After experiencing slavery, it would be hypocritical of the Jewish people to take advantage of any other group of people. To do so would be to sink to the level of the oppressors. Instead, a better world is created when we are able to look out for each other and be willing to live a life of service to others. To do so will reverse one’s fortunes, push away bad luck, and create a loving and supportive atmosphere to live in.
