How to find more joy in the Equinox

The fall equinox is here on September 23rd. What exactly does that mean?

An equinox is the moment when the plane of the earth’s equator passes through the center of the sun’s disk. Generally speaking, the Sun spends roughly an equal time above and below the horizon at every location on the Earth, so night and day are equal lengths of time. In the northern hemisphere, there are two equinoxes every year, the vernal equinox (March) and the autumnal equinox (September)
So twice a year, the universe gives you balance points. These balance points not only indicate the last day of one season and the first day of next one, it provides us the opportunity to feel grateful for what we accomplished. Additionally, these points allow us the space to re-direct or continue using our energy to achieve our goals.

Ok, I know that many people think that the fall equinox means that Starbucks brings back all of their pumpkin yummies or that we will be wearing socks with our sandals if you live in Florida. In reality, our nights will be longer and the days continue to be shorter until December. So what’s there to be happy about? How do we find more happiness at this time? There are 3 ways we can find more joy during the equinox.
This is a time to really examine where you’re going.

  1. Take this time to think about your “harvest.” Specifically, look at your gifts and your talents and then look at your aspirations. Are they lining up or do you need to let go of some of your ideas and create a new agenda. For example losing 80 lbs. by Christmas can be replaced with losing 20 lbs. and adding tai chai twice a week.
  2. The second way to find joy is to understand that the equinox is about the balance of light and dark. Finding this balance within ourselves is so important. Balancing your energy between work and play, between rest and activity, and between ascension and evolution will increase your self-worth. Taking the time to schedule a mini vacation after working through the summer is a great reward.
  3. The third way is to honor traditions. Your own family rituals along with your ancestor’s traditions can provide a time when communities come together. Fall festivals, musical gatherings, and just getting together with friends gives you the time to be social. Now is the time our thoughts turn to thinking of the upcoming holidays, football games, and feeling connected to others.

So just thinking about the autumnal equinox will bring you joy through examining your harvest, creating balance and honoring your family traditions. Grab a hot chocolate and dust off your cozy sweaters, it’s fall!
