What it means to be a Shaman. Is it right for you?

You may have heard or seen the term Shaman and wondered to yourself or out load what in the world is that? Maybe images of Native Americans or beautifully adorned indigenous peoples from around the globe pop into your mind at first blush. Maybe you have been taught to fear the word and have biases not based in reality. Whatever your thoughts and feelings it’s still a curiosity, so we asked Beatriz Orive Shaman,  founder of Mystery School, author of “Awakening the Soul” and Guest Lecturer at The Om Shoppe to help clarify.

Beatrice states, “At the very essence and heart of Shamanism is a fundamental life’s purpose to be of service to others. In order for the shaman to do her best work, she must be committed to healing herself continuously. This way she can be a clean vessel when doing her work, rather than filtering information through her wounds. The best shamans also adhere to strict principles in their work and life: impeccability (thoughts, actions, words), purity of intent (doing the work out of a desire to truly help…free of judgment), unconditional love, and humility (never boasting or taking credit).

A shaman is someone that travels to alternate realities or dimensions in order to bring balance to a person, a family, or a location. The shaman is generally guided by the drum. When the drum beats at 4-5 beats per second, she accesses the theta waves in the brain, which invoke images. The shaman must be comfortable moving between worlds, having one foot in this reality and another in “Heaven”. It is about manifesting the invisible into the visible.

Her own practice must be strong and committed, taking time to journey and merge with both nature and the cosmos. Although she takes her work seriously, she must not take herself seriously. She must always find the joy in life and be able to drink from the nectar. There must be a stillness inside, making her the best observer of life and events. This is where the magic always resides.”
